Development and validation of an index to assess hospital quality management systems

Assessing Quality Management Systems across Europe has the potential to help policy-makers and other stakeholders to compare hospitals and focus on the most important areas for improvement.

The objective of this study was to develop and validate an up-to-date and more concise survey instrument to assess hospital Quality Management Systems in European countries, and to compute an index—the Quality Management Systems Index (QMSI)—representing its developmental stage.


Specifically, the authors report on its structure, reliability, validity and descriptive statistics of the QMSI and its scales.
